Don't Fall for a Lotto Scam

Everyday thousands of people receive emails telling them they have won a prize. Many claim that the reader has won a prize from some lottery. Sometime it's a name of a fake charity "The Loving Life Lottery" or more often there is reference to a real lottery game as a "Hot Lotto" or "Powerball". These criminals even add links to the winning numbers on site like AllLotto.com

These criminals even add links to the winning numbers on site like AllLotto.com

to help confuse the reader that AllLotto is not only sending the email, but is responsible for your winning. Unfortunately, none of what you read in that email is true, there is no lottery, there are no prizes and most importantly there is never any cost for cashing in a real lottery prize.

If someone asks you to pay for a prize, it is not a prize, it's a scam and don't give them your money.

Let's be realistic here: How did you win a prize in a Lottery which you did not enter? How did the state lottery, which sells tickets, anonymously via convenience and grocery stores find your email? But most importantly, how is it that the lottery is expecting you to pay to get your prize? Taxes are taken out from the prize, not paid before the prize is awarded.

If you get a letter like this, it's a SCAM - don't answer!

About the Powerball Lottery
Powerball has been running since 1992, following the re-branding of Lotto*America. The first ever draw of Powerball was held on April 22, 1992. Since then, the Powerball lottery has expanded rapidly and is now sold in 44 states and has a minimum jackpot of $20 million.

Draws are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10.59 p.m. (EST) and there are five winning numbers drawn from a pool of 59 balls, as well as one extra ball called the Powerball. If you're lucky enough to match five numbers and the Powerball, then you'll hit the jackpot, just like the many winners over the years. Be sure to visit this page after the latest draw for the most recent Powerball lottery results, to find out if you're one of those lucky people.

One funny story concerning the Powerball draw came in March, 2005 when 110 players matched all had five winning numbers, minus the Powerball (22, 28, 32, 33 and 39). The Powerball lottery officials, who were understandably suspicious, paid out nearly $20 million. It soon came to light that a biscuit company from New York named Wonton Food had printed six numbers to go in their fortune cookies and these numbers really had proved to be lucky, as they were the five Powerball numbers, minus the Powerball! Unfortunately for the 110 players, they were just two off the Powerball number of 42, as the number 40 had been predicted in the fortune cookies.

Winning Powerball numbers can be claimed for up to a year after the draw date, but this can vary, depending on which state the lottery ticket was bought in. The revenue created by Powerball tickets is used by each state in whichever way that they choose, with education sectors often benefiting from the profits.

About the Mega Millions Lottery
Mega Millions is the monster of multi-state lotteries and while it's primarily popular in the U.S, lotto fans all around the world can play it. The Mega Millions lottery was originally called The Big Game, but was rebranded in May 2002 by its organizers, the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). The very first drawing of The Big Game was on September 6, 1996 with six states (Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts and Virginia) taking part.

Since then, a further 35 state lotteries have joined Mega Millions to increase the number of states participating to 41. An example that shows how popular the multi-state lottery has become came on March 6, 2007, when the Mega Millions jackpot reached $390 million. On this day, 10,500 tickets were sold every minute in the state of Virginia alone.

Any player that might be lucky enough to have Mega Millions winning numbers will be rewarded with a guaranteed jackpot of at least $12 million, with jackpots often increasing to hundreds of millions of dollars. Players buying Mega Millions lottery tickets shouldn't worry, as the jackpots very rarely stay at the $12 million minimum.

In fact, plenty of Mega Millions winners have been the lucky recipients of hundreds of millions of dollars, with more than ten jackpots reaching $250 million and more. To be a Mega Millions jackpot winner, all you have to do is match five normal balls and the Mega ball. However, even if don't hit the jackpot, there's still plenty more cash to be won, ranging from a $2 prize for matching the Mega ball, up to $250,000 for matching five numbers without the Mega ball.

The Mega Millions results are drawn at 11 p.m. (EST) on Tuesdays and Fridays and tickets can be purchased up to 15 minutes before the drawing. In order to play, simply choose five out of 56 white balls and then pick one gold Mega Ball out of 46. Good luck!
